Obstetrics & Gynaecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is one of the existing departments that was inherited from the State Hospital and upgraded upon the conversion of the State Hospital to Federal Medical Centre in July 2024.
The department specializes in providing full spectrum women reproductive organ care and healthcare services for women during pregnancy, childbirth and after childbirth. It also provides a platform for research and training of future generations of Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialists.

Profile
Dr. C.A. Olowookere is a distinguished consultant obstetrician and gynecologist with over 20 years of experience in the Nigerian healthcare sector.
He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree from the College of Medicine, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, in 2004.
He acquired the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2019 and has special interests in assisted reproductive techniques and infertility management.
Professional Background
Dr. Olowookere has served in various capacities across the private sector and secondary and tertiary healthcare levels. After his residency program, he joined the Ekiti State Hospitals’ Management Board in 2020 and served in various hospitals under the board.
He held positions as the Head of House officers training department, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, and Head of Clinical Services, among other units in the various hospitals where he served under the Hospitals Management Board.

Units
The department is further subdivided into 4 different units for specialized care and effective service delivery.
These units are:
Gyne-Oncology: This unit is concerned with the care and treatment of patients with gynecological cancer, including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancer.
Uro-gynecology: Uro-gynaecology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders, including urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, uterine prolapse, fistula, endometriosis, and many other conditions.
Fetomaternal Medicine: The improvement of the health of pregnant women and their babies is the core of this unit. The unit also manages health concerns that a mother and her fetus may present before, during, and immediately after childbirth.
Conditions managed by Fetomaternal Unit:
- Preeclampsia
- Multiple gestation
- Existing conditions in pregnancy, such as HIV, High Blood Pressure, Obesity etc
- Foetus development issues such as birth defect
- Preterm labour
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility: This unit in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department is responsible for handling issues that relate to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of reproductive disorders and diseases. Some of its core services include infertility treatment, sexual dysfunction management and assisted reproduction.
